Unemployed but Undeterred – Helping a Labourer Achieve His Goals

unemployed but undeterred case study

Jason, a 39 year old labourer from Essex was stuck in a rut. Recently unemployed, he was feeling the pinch as money ran low and was starting to feel anxious about his situation. He had big ambitions to better his life, but he didn’t have the funds to start the training he needed to start his chosen career path.

Jason envisaged a career that utilised his strengths and earned him reasonable pay, and with a passion for workplace health and safety he was determined to work towards a supervisory role in construction. To achieve this he wanted to complete his Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme training (SSSTS) along with his Site Management Safety Training Scheme, training (SMSTS).

He contacted CITB to see if there was any financial assistance available to support his training and they signposted him to the Lighthouse Charity. Anxious, worried, and not feeling great about himself, Jason called our helpline.

We approached Jason’s case holistically, firstly addressing his immediate financial issues by providing supermarket vouchers. With a weight off his shoulders, Jason was in a better state of mind to take the next step. We then funded and enrolled him on to both his SSSTS and SMSTS training so that he could progress towards his goals.

A few months on and we are absolutely delighted to share that Jason has now successfully passed his courses and has found his much sought after role as an Assistant Site Manager, supervising a team of groundworkers on a commercial development project in Central London.  And he’s ready to progress further and achieve an NVQ Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision course to increase his knowledge and qualifications.

Jason shared, “I was in a very difficult situation and was desperate for help to progress my career. I didn’t have the financial resources, and the Lighthouse Charity supported me. There was no judgement, I wasn’t made to feel a certain way, they just wanted to help me to get my life on track.

I was taken aback by the support I received and how quickly it was provided too. It was incredibly humbling.  If you are struggling in life and require any financial or emotional support, I would honestly say that reaching out to the Lighthouse Charity would be one of the best decisions you could make. I sincerely hope that sharing my journey will encourage other people that might be struggling to reach out and seek support from the Lighthouse Charity.”
