Earlier this year during a training session at work, Gary Smith, Commercial Manager at SES Engineering North, came up with a big idea for a fundraiser to give back to the construction industry.
He wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary for a cause close to his heart. Something that would push him to his limits and encourage camaraderie and purpose in the team.
The idea of the TransPennine Trail coast to coast was born – to cycle 215 miles from Southport to Hornsea over three days on traditional road and mountain bikes, all in support of the Lighthouse Charity.
In a show of construction community spirit, twelve people took on the challenge from all areas of the company, including clients, subcontractors and suppliers. The team kept each other motivated with encouragement, laughs and plenty of refreshment breaks as they rode across the British countryside accompanied by surprisingly balmy weather.
The convoy encountered hiccups- from booking mistakes to flat tyres – but team spirit shone throughout the ride. Curious onlookers were friendly and supportive, and many donated after hearing about the cause.
The ambitious fundraiser raised a staggering £22,000. Having held a charitable golf day earlier in the year, and subsequently becoming company supporters of the charity, SES Engineering were awarded an honorary place on Lighthouse’s Wall of Fame for their outstanding efforts.
