Protect Your Skin on Site
Working outside means you’re exposed to more than just the elements – it means extra sun exposure, too. As the weather warms up, it’s important to protect yourself from the risks of skin cancer. A few small habits can make a big difference – and we’re here to help you keep it simple.
Why It Matters for Construction Workers
Construction workers across the UK and Ireland spend hours each day outdoors, often without realising just how much sun exposure they’re getting. Whether it’s a blazing summer day or an overcast afternoon, UV rays are still hitting your skin – and over time, they can cause serious damage.
- 90% of skin cancer cases are linked to sun exposure
- Outdoor workers can be exposed to 5–10 times more UV radiation than people working indoors
- UV rays are invisible and can’t be felt – you won’t always feel hot or burn, but the damage is still happening
- Even short bursts of intense sun, like during lunch breaks or quick jobs without protection, can increase your risk
Unlike many other hazards on site, you might not see or feel the effects of sun damage until years down the line. That’s why protecting your skin is just as important as wearing a hardhat or high-vis jacket – it’s part of staying safe for the long term.
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers, but also one of the most preventable. With a few simple changes to your daily routine, you can significantly cut your risk.
Simple Steps to Stay Sun Safe
Protecting your skin doesn’t mean stopping work – it just means taking a few smart steps each day:
☀️ Cover up – Wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats or hardhats with neck capes to keep the sun off your neck and ears
🧴 Use sunscreen – Choose SPF 30+ with UVA and UVB protection. Apply it generously to exposed skin before work and top it up every couple of hours – especially if you’re sweating
🕶️ Wear sunglasses – UV rays can damage your eyes, too. Go for wrap-around styles if you can and try to find pairs that are UV resistant.
🌤️ Take breaks in the shade – Use break times to cool down and give your skin a rest from direct sun
🕓 Check the UV index – When it’s 3 or higher, take extra care
