Suicide is still one of the leading causes of death for men under 35. For those working in construction, the risk is even higher.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, we’re shining a light on the mental health crisis affecting our industry and encouraging everyone in construction to speak up, check in, and make it easier to ask for help.

A Hidden Crisis in Construction

These figures highlight something many of us already know: Working in construction can take its toll, both physically and mentally. But they also show how important it is to keep the conversation going, and to make sure everyone knows where to find support.

Long hours, tight deadlines, job insecurity and time away from loved ones can all take a toll. And in a sector where people often feel the need to ‘just get on with it’, mental health is not always easy to talk about.

For those who are self-employed or working in smaller firms, finding the right support can sometimes feel difficult. But the good news is that things are changing. More companies are taking wellbeing seriously, and more people are opening up, helping to break the stigma that has been part of the industry for too long.

You do not have to wait until things feel overwhelming. Support is available, and reaching out does not mean you are weak. It shows strength and self-awareness, and it can make a real difference.

This World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s build on the progress that has already begun. Let’s continue to create a culture where looking out for one another is part of everyday working life, and where nobody in construction feels they have to face things on their own.
