Let’s talk about the things we usually don’t
There are conversations most of us avoid, not because they don’t matter, but because they feel uncomfortable. Too personal. Too complicated. Or just easier to keep to ourselves.
In construction, that silence can be even louder. Long hours, tough environments, and the pressure to just “get on with it” mean a lot of people carry things on their own without ever saying anything out loud.
Speak Up, Reach Out is about changing that. It’s about making space for the conversations that don’t usually happen, the ones that sit in the background but affect how we feel, how we work, and how we show up every day. Because keeping things in doesn’t make them easier, but sharing even a small part of what you’re dealing with can.
Speak Up, Reach Out Webinars
Following the success of our webinars for Mental Health Awareness Week, our Partnership Managers are discussing taboo subjects that they are passionate about and:
How they affect both us and our colleagues, friends and family
How the Lighthouse can help in these areas
We’ll also focus on what you can do to support the Lighthouse Charity’s essential wellbeing services, including fundraising or becoming a Company Supporter.
Each webinar is completely free and a great chance to learn about these areas, share your experiences and join the conversation.
What tends to stay unsaid
We hear it time and time again: people struggling quietly with things they feel they can’t talk about. Money worries, addiction, problems at home, feeling isolated, being treated unfairly, or simply trying to hold everything together.
None of these experiences are rare. They’re part of real life, both on and off site. But when no one talks about them, it can feel like you’re the only one going through it, and that’s where things can start to build.
This campaign is about breaking that silence and reminding people that they’re not alone in what they’re facing.
If you’re thinking about saying something
Opening up doesn’t have to be a big moment or a perfectly worded conversation. Often, it starts with something small, like saying you’ve been finding things tough, or admitting that something hasn’t felt quite right for a while.
That might be a quick message, a quiet chat on a break, or even just putting it into words for the first time. You don’t need to have all the answers, and you don’t need to explain everything at once. Just starting the conversation can help take some of the pressure off.
And if saying it out loud doesn’t feel possible yet, there are other ways to begin. Writing things down, or reaching out in a way that feels safer, can still be a powerful first step.
Having someone’s back
Looking out for each other doesn’t require the perfect words or expert advice. Most of the time, it comes down to noticing when something isn’t quite right and taking the time to check in.
A simple “are you alright?” can go a long way when it’s genuine. Giving someone space to talk, listening without judgement, and not feeling the need to fix everything can make it easier for someone to open up.
And if they do, helping them find the right support, whether that’s a helpline, someone on site, or someone they trust, can make a real difference.
Topics people don’t always talk about
Some topics come up again and again, not because they’re easy to talk about, but because they’re often kept quiet.
In construction, that might include:
- Addiction, whether that’s alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn or sex
- Money worries, debt, or financial pressure
- Relationship problems, separation or divorce
- Single parenthood and the strain of balancing everything alone
- Bullying, banter going too far, or feeling excluded at work
- Feeling isolated or lonely, especially when working away from home
- Struggling with sleep, exhaustion, or constant fatigue
- Stress building up without a clear way to deal with it
- Feeling low, anxious, or not quite like yourself
- The pressure to just “get on with it”, even when things aren’t okay
You don’t have to talk about everything, but talking about something can make a difference.
You don’t have to carry it on your own
Whatever you’re going through, support is available.
