Looking after your body

When people talk about health in construction, the conversation often centres on mental wellbeing. But this Men’s Health Week, we want to highlight that overall health is a balance of the physical and mental.

Because how you feel physically plays a huge part in how you cope, think and perform every day.

Long hours, physically demanding work, early starts, travel, and time away from home can all take their toll. It’s easy to put your own health on the back burner, skip meals, run on little sleep, and push through aches and pains.

Over time, that adds up.

This week is about bringing things back to basics. Looking after your body in a way that actually works on site, not just in theory.

The impact you feel everyday

Looking after your physical health is not about building muscle or strict routines. It is about having the energy to get through the day, staying safe on site, and protecting your long-term health.

Small, consistent habits can help you:

  • Stay focused and alert
  • Reduce fatigue and risk of accidents
  • Improve mood and resilience
  • Support heart health and overall wellbeing

You do not need to overhaul your entire lifestyle. A few realistic changes can make a real difference.

Basics that make a difference

Eat healthily to fuel your body.

It is easy to grab whatever is quickest, especially on busy days. But what you eat directly affects your energy levels.

Try to:

  • Include protein in your meals to keep you fuller for longer
  • Avoid relying on sugary snacks for quick energy boosts
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day, even when it’s not hot

Even small swaps can help you feel more steady and less drained.

Sleep is not a luxury

Early starts, long shifts and travel can make good sleep feel out of reach. But poor sleep builds up quickly and impacts everything from concentration to mood.

Where you can:

  • Aim for a consistent sleep routine, even if shifts vary
  • Reduce screen time before bed
  • Keep your sleeping environment as dark and quiet as possible

Better sleep doesn’t just help you feel rested. It helps keep you safe.

Keep moving, even outside of work

Construction work is physical, but that does not always mean it is balanced.

Simple things like stretching, mobility work or light exercise can:

  • Reduce stiffness and injury risk
  • Support joint health
  • Improve overall strength and recovery

You do not need a full gym routine. A few minutes regularly can go a long way.

Understanding men’s health

Some health topics are still not talked about enough, especially in male-dominated industries.

Things like:

  • Heart health
  • Prostate health
  • Hormonal changes, such as low testosterone or andropause
  • Energy levels and fatigue
  • Changes in mood

These are all part of overall health, not something to ignore or push through.

If something doesn’t feel right, it is worth paying attention to. Getting checked early can make a big difference.
