Building a Culture Where Everyone Belongs
Pride Month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, recognise progress, and acknowledge the work still to be done to ensure everyone feels safe, respected and valued.
In construction, where teamwork, trust and resilience are part of everyday life, creating an inclusive culture is not just the right thing to do – it is essential. Everyone deserves to bring their whole self to work without fear of discrimination, judgement, or exclusion.
This Pride Month, we are encouraging the industry to take meaningful action to support LGBTQ+ colleagues across the UK and Ireland.
Construction is built on strong relationships. Whether on site, in the office, or travelling between projects, people rely on one another. But for some LGBTQ+ workers, the workplace can feel isolating.
Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ people are more likely to experience:
- Workplace discrimination or harassment
- Higher levels of stress and anxiety
- Reluctance to speak openly about their personal lives
- Barriers to progression
In industries traditionally perceived as male-dominated, there can be added pressure to “fit in” or stay silent. Creating inclusive workplaces isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about everyday respect. It’s about language, leadership, and the confidence to challenge behaviour that excludes others.
When people can’t be themselves at work
Construction is built on teamwork, trust, and communication. But when people feel like they have to hide who they are, it can affect:
- Mental health and confidence
- Job satisfaction and retention
- Team cohesion and site culture
For an industry already facing challenges around wellbeing, long hours, and time away from home, feeling excluded or misunderstood can make things even harder.
At Lighthouse Charity, we know that psychological safety matters just as much as physical safety. Supporting LGBTQ+ colleagues is part of building healthier, stronger workplaces across the industry.
What you can do this Pride Month
For individuals
- Listen to lived experiences without judgement
- Lead by example
- Using inclusive language
- Challenging inappropriate comments
- Respecting pronouns and identities – and if you’re unsure, it’s okay to ask. A simple, respectful question can go a long way
- Checking in with colleagues who may feel isolated
For companies
- Review equality, diversity and inclusion policies
- Provide inclusion training for managers and site leaders
- Make support services visible across sites and offices
- Set clear expectations around respect and behaviour
Inclusion should not be limited to one month. Pride is a reminder – not the end point.
