A determined team from Galliford Try’s North West business took on a tough two-day cycling challenge this summer, covering 127 miles along the Liverpool to Leeds Canal, raising more than £7,397 for Lighthouse.

The two-day challenge saw 12 riders set off from Liverpool and make their way to Leeds via Burnley. While the route offered plenty of stunning canal-side scenery, the team also had to contend with some particularly wet and challenging weather on the opening day.

Despite the dreadful conditions, the riders powered on, completing the first leg to Burnley before finishing the journey into Leeds on day two.

Team members were Aneep Desai, Dan Ainsworth, Des Langan, Dillon Roberts, James Wood, Lee Harrison, Mike Kenworthy, Paul Edmonds, Steve Shorrock, Graham Harper and David Bickerstaffe, bringing together colleagues from across the business.

Behind the scenes, Gerry Rushton played a crucial role in keeping the challenge on track. Acting as driver, mechanic and logistics coordinator, he ensured the team could continue safely despite several mechanical issues encountered along the route.

As a business operating within the industry, Galliford Try understands the pressures that can affect workers and their families, both on and off site. By taking on the challenge together, the team wanted to highlight the importance of wellbeing, encourage conversations around mental health and remind people that support is available whenever it’s needed.

The ride also showcased the power of teamwork and mutual support. From battling the weather to overcoming unexpected bike repairs, every mile required determination, resilience and a willingness to help one another through the tougher moments.

David Bickerstaffe, Senior Project Manager at Galliford Try North West, said, “The Liverpool to Leeds bike ride was a fantastic challenge that brought together colleagues from across the business for a cause that means a great deal to our industry. Construction can be demanding, and the Lighthouse Charity provides vital support to workers and their families when they need it most. We are proud to support an organisation that promotes wellbeing, offers practical assistance and encourages people to look out for one another. The amount raised is a testament to the commitment of everyone who took part and everyone who supported us along the way.”

With sponsorship continuing to come in after the event, the final fundraising total is expected to be even higher.

Thank you to everyone at Galliford Try North West who cycled, supported, donated, and helped make the challenge such a success.
