The 2024 Battle of the Commentators event proved to be more than just a star-studded spectacle, as one guest used the opportunity to raise vital funds for the Lighthouse Charity, supporting the wellbeing of those working in the construction industry.

Hosted by Legend Holidays and Events, the event saw 1,200 attendees gather for an evening reminiscent of the popular TV series A League of Their Own—but on a much grander scale. Among those attending was Paul Martin from Ergro, who secured a VIP table of ten after hearing glowing reviews from colleagues who attended in 2023.

With an electric atmosphere, the event was a haven for celebrity enthusiasts, offering guests the chance to mingle with well known personalities. However, for Paul, the highlight was ensuring his clients had an unforgettable experience. “We had a fantastic table close to the catwalk where all the action was happening. It made our guests feel special, and of course, there was plenty of food and drink to go around,” he shared.

While the commentators battled for the win, the true victory of the night came when Paul’s table was selected for an on stage fundraising opportunity.

Each table was required to nominate a charity, and Paul instinctively wrote down Lighthouse Charity. “You had supported our team in the past, and it felt right to put you forward,” he explained. To his surprise, his table number was drawn, and he soon found himself on stage, addressing the crowd of 1,200 people.

Despite feeling unprepared to talk about our charity, his words resonated, securing support for the Lighthouse Charity and raising awareness of our work in the construction industry.

Reflecting on the experience, Paul expressed immense pride in being able to give back. “Construction can be brutal. It’s traditionally a male dominated sector where people often keep their struggles to themselves. At Ergro, we have always supported our team, and Lighthouse Charity has played a crucial role in providing specialist support when we needed it.”

Paul also acknowledged the growing openness within the industry when it comes to discussing mental health and wellbeing. “More needs to be done, but I believe we are making progress in addressing issues that affect us both inside and outside of work.”
