Returning on Sunday 13 September 2026, the world’s biggest half marathon once again brings together tens of thousands of runners for an unforgettable 13.1-mile journey from Newcastle to South Shields.

From the electric start line in the city centre to the iconic Tyne Bridge crossing and the unforgettable finish by the sea, the Great North Run is famous for its roaring crowd support, incredible atmosphere and extraordinary fundraising spirit.

Whether participants are ticking off a bucket-list challenge, returning for another unforgettable year, or taking on their very first half marathon, this is an event that delivers something truly special.

What to Expect

From the moment you set off across the Tyne Bridge, the energy is unmistakable. You’ll run through Newcastle’s city streets, surrounded by crowds that genuinely carry you forward, with music, banners and cheers at almost every turn. As the route opens out through Gateshead, things settle into a steady rhythm, giving you time to find your pace before the long stretch towards the coast.

It’s a fun, lively course with plenty to look at, a great atmosphere the whole way, and no shortage of moments that remind you why people come back year after year.
