For Danny, a 35 year old civil engineer, life had had its ups and downs. As a loving single parent to his young son, yet with no family to lean on, he felt the weight of responsibility heavily on his shoulders.
Juggling employment, finances and parenting, Danny couldn’t afford to let anything slip. When he suffered a back injury at work, it felt like his life had come crashing down.
Unable to work, Danny’s financial situation started to suffer. He found himself worrying about how to feed his son, and with rent arrears stacking up, and fear of eviction, he started to feel desperate and hopeless. Danny then remembered a Lighthouse Charity poster he had seen at work. Mustering all of his courage, he rang our helpline.
He was quickly passed to one of our case workers who was able to assess and prioritise the support that he needed. We reviewed Danny’s practical, financial and emotional needs. Firstly, we made sure he had food shops in to feed himself and his son, as well as financial help with rent and council tax. Next, we organised ten counselling sessions to help him to manage his stress. With the pressure off, he was better placed to apply for his statutory benefits until such time that he could return to work, and he even secured a better job to return to after his recovery.
Danny’s future is bright. He got through his recovery period and is now thriving in his new job. He says, ‘I’m forever grateful for the help and advice I received – I can now look to the future with positivity.’
