A Splashing Success at Dorney Lake

There are plenty of ways to make a splash at a Dragon Boat Race… but one team took things a little too literally!

Last month, we held our very first Lighthouse Charity Dragon Boat Race at Dorney Lake, Windsor. Nine teams battled it out on the water in a day packed with friendly competition, team spirit and plenty of laughs. But the moment everyone was talking about came when one boat unexpectedly capsized, sending its crew into the water. Thankfully, everyone was wearing appropriate lifejackets, safety procedures worked exactly as planned, and the team made a very quick and safe return to dry land.

With the excitement levels firmly raised, the racing continued as teams paddled their hearts out in support of Lighthouse and the vital work we do across the construction industry. From seasoned competitors to complete beginners, every crew embraced the challenge and threw themselves into the day, both figuratively and, in one case, literally.

The event brought together construction businesses and supporters from across the industry, all united by a common goal: helping ensure no construction worker or their family has to face a crisis alone. The atmosphere throughout the day was fantastic, with colleagues, friends and family cheering from the banks and creating a real sense of community.

A huge congratulations goes to Maber Construction and Interiors, who powered their way to victory in the final race and proudly lifted the inaugural Dragon Boat Race trophy.

We’d also like to thank all of the teams who took part and helped make the event such a success:

  • Ambit
  • Maber Construction and Interiors
  • NASC – National Access and Scaffolding Confederation
  • RM Contractors
  • Apollo Civil Engineering Ltd
  • Hunter Stein Construction Ltd
  • SES Engineering Services
  • The Lighthouse Charity Team

Events like this are about far more than crossing the finish line first. They bring people together, start important conversations and raise awareness of the support available to our construction community. Every team, supporter, volunteer and sponsor played a part in making the day memorable.

A special thank you goes to everyone who raced, volunteered, cheered from the sidelines and helped organise the event. Your enthusiasm, energy and generosity turned our first Dragon Boat Race into an unforgettable day.

Aside from one unexpected swimming lesson, we couldn’t have asked for a better start.

We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year. 🚣‍♂️🐉💜
