What we've learned…
Real voices. Real support. Real change.
For 70 years, construction workers and their families have been reaching out to the Lighthouse Charity for support.
Some have faced financial pressure. Some have struggled with mental health. Some have navigated bereavement, relationship breakdown, ill health, debt, or unemployment. Everyone is struggling with something.
This World Mental Health Day, we’re sharing a little about what we’ve learned since 1956 and how reaching out for support has changed the lives of thousands of construction workers.
- We’ve learned that people are sometimes afraid to reach out for help because they feel that it is a weakness.
- We’ve learned that people often wait too long before reaching out.
- We’ve learned that mental health and physical and financial wellbeing are all connected.
- We’ve learned that sometimes a single conversation can change someone’s life.
- And that nobody should have to face a crisis alone.
Because behind every call, message and conversation is a reminder that reaching out takes strength, not weakness.
What we’ve learned about strength
For too long, strength in construction has been associated with keeping things to yourself, pushing through and getting on with the job.
But the people we’ve supported have taught us something different:
- Real strength is recognising when things are getting too much.
- Real strength is asking for help when you need it.
- Real strength is accepting support.
- And real strength is helping others do the same.
What we've learned from feedback from some of the people we’ve supported
To be able to speak with someone with your kind manner and understanding, I'm not sure you can know how much better you made me feel that day.
When I get back on site, I will make everyone more aware of Lighthouse. We need you. "
Thank you to everyone who listened.
"This on its own is massive for me.
It tells me there is support and people like yourselves are there to help.
To me, that's massive."
"Thank you for your kindness, understanding and support.
It has made a difficult situation feel a little less overwhelming.
I truly don't have enough words to describe how grateful I am."
Just wanted to give feedback and say thank you."
Lighthouse has helped me more than I deserve.
You've been more helpful than any of the professionals involved in our case.
It's comforting knowing I can contact you if needed."
What we’d like to pass on to everyone in construction
Over the years, thousands of construction workers and family members have trusted us with some of the hardest moments of their lives.
Their experiences have taught us that mental health is rarely just about one thing.
Financial worries, family pressures, grief, unemployment, housing concerns and physical health challenges can all affect how we feel.
That’s why our support goes beyond a single conversation.
And that’s why we’ll continue listening.
This World Mental Health Day, if you’re struggling, remember this:
Reaching out isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s one of the strongest things you can do.
And when you’re ready, we’re here to listen.
