Ben, a 37 year old labourer from the South East had fallen on hard times. Like so many in the construction industry, he was struggling with the instability of contract work. He found himself unemployed and falling behind on his rent.
As his situation worsened, his wellbeing started to suffer, and day to day life became overwhelming. When his landlord threatened eviction, the reality of the situation hit him, and he knew he needed help. Having heard about the Lighthouse Charity through work, Ben made the decision to call our helpline.
Ben was overwhelmed and unsure of his options, seeking guidance in a difficult period. Once he spoke to our team, the burden started to ease. To begin with, we offered Ben a grant to cover a month’s rent, removing the immediate pressure. Next, we provided guidance and information on benefit entitlement and helped him to fill in the relevant forms. Throughout this period we organised food deliveries, giving him breathing space to recover and get back on his feet.
With the benefit of a little support in a difficult period, Ben now feels his financial strain has eased. He is armed with the proper information and government help, and now has the space to think about securing stable employment and improving his wellbeing.
He says, “I’m managing better now. Things are still challenging, but I’m more organised and focused. If other people are struggling I would encourage them to reach out without hesitation, the support can make a real difference.”
