It was a memorable summer evening on the Clyde, boasting something a little different – great music, spectacular scenery and the chance to support a fantastic cause – you could say it was a night out with dignity!
On Friday 14th August, two Scottish icons came together on the River Clyde. The World’s last seagoing paddle steamer hosted Dignity – The Deacon Blue Experience for a special fundraising evening cruise to support the Lighthouse Charity. It was a perfect pairing for the Clyde, bringing together Glasgow’s favourite steamer with the music of one of Scotland’s most iconic bands.
Over 600 guests boarded the Waverley for a very special evening and a trip ‘Doon the Watter’ starting at the Glasgow Science Centre, steaming to the Tail of the Bank, and then gracefully sweeping round for the return trip.
Along the way there were live performances of Deacon Blue favourites including Dignity and Real Gone Kid. Guests soaked up the atmosphere, waved flags and sang along with gusto. There was also plenty of time for everyone to take in the views as the ship’s horns signalled Waverley’s journey down the Clyde.
Behind the music was an important cause and the event raised over £17,500. The sum raised consisted of ticket sales, donations on the night and sponsors who supported the event.
Alan Gilmour, Chair of Lighthouse Charity Scotland West, said: ” Following the amazing success of our Lighthouse Charity Scotland West 60th Anniversary celebration last year aboard Waverley, we decided to repeat the celebration for the charity’s 70th Anniversary this year. What better way to do so again than onboard the iconic Waverley with support from Dignity- the Deacon Blue Experience. It was definitely a joint celebration with our charity marking 70 years of supporting the construction industry and Waverley celebrating 80 years since her maiden voyage.
