‘Jakub’, a 35-year-old forklift driver living in the East Midlands, was struggling to keep his head above water financially. Jakub’s car had broken down and was in the garage for repair. He was unable to get to work which was a three hour commute, which meant no income, no way to pay the garage bill and no way to buy food.
After hearing about the Lighthouse Charity from a colleague, and with money rapidly dwindling, he finally decided to reach out for the help he needed.
He spoke with our helpline team and was assigned a caseworker to help him get out of the vicious cycle he was in. We prioritised food shops and worked with him to find a hire car to get him to work. Our caseworker negotiated with the garage to accept monthly repayments for the overall balance, and to release the car.
With his car released and income reinstated, Jakub could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now, he is gradually paying off his car bill and has financial security again.
Jakub has pledged to tell as many people as he can about our charity and added, “I’ll be honest, no-one has ever shown me as much interest and care as you. ‘Thank you’ is a weak word.”
Our caseworker worked closely with Jakub and over time, he felt able to trust her with the story of his life. Whilst Jakub’s recent problem was temporary, it turned out his life had been a remarkable story of overcoming hardship. Read Jakub’s full story here.
