Snore. Tax & CIS support is about as boring a topic as it gets, but humour us. Understanding your tax situation means you’ll know how to make the best of it. And CIS is basically a helpful savings scheme. What does all this mean for you? More financial stability and even extra cash.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 2026 - Making Tax Digital
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a government-led initiative that aims to modernise the UK tax system, starting in 2026. Read our blog here to see if and how it applies to you.
Your taxes
Everyone who earns over the personal allowance* must pay at least 20% of the amount on top in taxes. As an employee, you can relax. Your employer deducts tax and National Insurance for you, and you don’t have to think about it. If you’re self-employed, however, you are responsible for your taxes and submitting a tax return at the end of the year. Before CIS, this route meant forking out for a heavy tax bill all in one go.

Construction Industry Scheme
The CIS scheme is in place to make sure that tax is deducted as you go along. The contractors you work for take 20% off before paying you, which acts as an advance payment towards your taxes.
The great thing about this scheme is that if you have overpaid at the end of the tax year, you will receive a refund. Refunds are common if you have a lot of work-related expenses, or ‘tax deductible expenses’.
Work-related expenses
If you’re paying for anything to do with work, you can claim against your tax bill. If you’re paying one big bill, this can reduce the amount you have to pay. If you are on the CIS system, this can increase your refund.
So what sort of thing can you claim for?
